The ULTIMATE Horseradish Sauce! This sauce is deliciously creamy with just the right pop of flavor. Perfect for dipping or dressing any of your favorite dishes!
When it comes to my taste in food, if there’s one thing that’s true about me it’s that I LOVE sauces. Whether it’s salad dressing or dipping sauce or anything in between… I want it. And I want a lot of it.
And as much as I love all sauces, I’m especially partial to anything creamy. Which is definitely what I love so much about this horseradish sauce. It starts with a mayo + sour cream base and adds in the spicy, peppery kick of horseradish. But it doesn’t stop there… it also has hints of garlic, lemon, salt & pepper. And the end result is a delicious sauce that’s also incredibly versatile.
I first made this sauce as a dip for Breaded Mushrooms, and it was exactly what I was looking for. Since then we’ve used it on everything from potatoes to pork chops to roasted veggies… and it’s literally always a delicious combo.
Scared of horseradish? Don’t be! This recipe lets you adjust the amount of horseradish flavor according to your tastes… so you can either ease your way in or turn the flavor on full blast. Either way, this is one dipping sauce you DON’T want to pass up!
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup mayo
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a small mixing bowl and whisk together until creamy.
- Use as a dipping sauce or condiment for any of your favorite appetizers or meals.
Recipe variations
I’ve tried multiple versions of this sauce over the years and ultimately landed on one that combines equal parts mayo and sour cream. Many recipes call for all sour cream OR a 2:1 ratio of sour cream to mayo. I found that these recipes always had an overwhelming sour cream flavor and lacked the creaminess I was really looking for, whereas equal parts mayo and sour cream is the perfect balance.
Of course, everyone’s tastes are slightly different, so here are some variations to consider:
- Omit the mayo and double the sour cream
- Cut the mayo in half and replace that amount with sour cream
- Use white wine or apple cider vinegar in place of lemon juice
- Add 1/2 teaspoon dijon mustard or 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder
- Increase or decrease the horseradish according to your preferences
