The BEST Air Fryer Mushrooms! These breaded mushrooms are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with amazing flavor. Perfect for dipping in all your favorite sauces… and especially delicious with our Creamy Horseradish Sauce!
We all know them. Those delicious sampler platters on restaurant menus. The ones that always sound so enticing… loaded with every fried thing you can imagine. And my favorite ones always have breaded mushrooms.
They’re a staple on appetizer menus… but did you know they’re also incredibly easy to make at home? And I would argue that this homemade version is even better than the ones at your favorite restaurant.
Why? Because they’re ULTRA crispy and packed with flavor… thanks to a combination of panko bread crumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, simple seasonings, and the magic of the air fryer!
Best of all, you don’t need to use ANY oil. You heard that right… deliciously crispy breaded mushrooms with zero oil! In other words, the BEST breaded mushrooms you’ve ever had. Guaranteed!
Ingredients
This recipe can really be made with any type of mushrooms, but in my opinion, the smaller, the better! Ideally I would have used Button Mushrooms, but since I couldn’t find any I substituted Baby Bellas. (PRO TIP: buy more than you need so you can choose the smallest ones!)
- 8 ounces mushrooms – I used baby bella
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 2-3 eggs
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
- 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Instructions
Obviously we all know that mushrooms need to be cleaned before using them. But since they absorb water like a sponge, when it comes to the air fryer you’ll want to avoid rinsing or soaking them. The key to achieving the crispiness you want is gently wiping them with a wet cloth or paper towel to remove the dirt without over-saturating them.
- Wipe mushrooms with a wet paper towel to remove dirt. (This will also help the flour “stick”)
- In a small bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, Parmesan, and seasonings.
- Whisk the eggs in a second bowl and add the flour to a third bowl.
- Dip each mushroom into the flour, then the egg, then the bread crumb mixture. Be sure it is fully coated each time.
- Dip the coated mushroom back into the egg, then into the bread crumb mixture again.
- Place mushrooms in air fryer basket, being careful not to overcrowd. Spray mushrooms with olive oil using an oil mister (**do NOT use aerosol cooking spray, as it can damage the inside of the basket**).
- Air fry at 375° for 12 minutes, flipping halfway through and spraying again with olive oil.
- Repeat process as necessary until all mushrooms are done.
Recipe variations
My family LOVED the way this recipe turned out, but as with any recipe, there’s always room for adjustments. These are some tips and suggestions if you’re interested in mixing things up!
- Use any type of mushrooms in place of Baby Bellas
- Remove the mushroom stems before breading
- Substitute regular or Italian seasoned bread crumbs for the panko bread crumbs
- Add any of your favorite seasonings to the bread crumb mixture
- Make them dairy free by omitting the Parmesan cheese
- For a lighter breading, don’t double coat
