This Blackberry Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwich is the perfect combination of savory and sweet. Made with Swiss cheese, blackberry jam, fresh jalapeños, and crispy bacon, it’s an unexpectedly delicious combo and a must try for grilled cheese lovers!

When it comes to sandwiches, there are certain combinations that just go together. Like bacon, lettuce & tomato or ham & Swiss on rye. And as delicious as these combinations are, I often find that my favorites are the ones that have an element of surprise.
Case in point: this Blackberry Bacon Grilled Cheese. It’s an unexpected combination of Swiss cheese, crispy bacon, blackberry jam, and fresh jalapeños on toasted sourdough bread. And it’s absolutely DELICIOUS.
We’re talking mouthwatering, craveable, addictively delicious. The type of sandwich you literally dream about! Why? Because it hits all the right notes! Between the nutty Swiss cheese and the salty bacon and the spicy jalapeños and the sweet blackberry jam, it’s a flavor explosion that’s just waiting to be experienced.

what you’ll need for this recipe
- Bread – Like any traditional grilled cheese, this one is sandwiched between 2 slices of bread. I used sliced sourdough, but you can use any type of bread you like.
- Cheese – Swiss cheese adds a deliciously nutty, slightly sweet flavor to this sandwich. You could also use sliced Provolone, Monterey Jack, Gouda, or Cheddar.
- Bacon – Crispy bacon gives this grilled cheese an extra level of savory goodness and also makes it more hearty and satisfying. Substitute ham or turkey bacon if you prefer.
- Jalapeños – Sliced jalapeños add a spicy kick and extra crunch to this sandwich. For more of a kick, use sliced habaneros!
- Jam – Instead of a more traditional savory spread, I used blackberry jam to add sweetness to this recipe. Any type of jam would be delicious, including strawberry, peach, orange marmalade, or cherry!

how to make blackberry bacon grilled cheese
Assemble the sandwich. Butter one slice of bread and place it, butter side down, in a skillet. Spread with jam, then add the cheese, bacon, and jalapeños. Top it with a second slice of buttered bread, butter side up.
Grill. Heat the skillet to medium and grill 4-5 minutes on each side, until the cheese is fully melted and the bread is golden brown.

Recipe Variations
- Use any type of bread (white, wheat, ciabatta, or any type you have on hand)
- Substitute turkey bacon, ham or prosciutto for the bacon
- Use any flavor of jam (peach, strawberry, mixed berry, cherry, or orange would all be delicious!)
- Substitute any type of cheese for the Swiss
- Add fresh spinach or arugula
- Add thinly sliced apples or pears
- Add fresh basil
- Substitute any of your favorite peppers for the jalapeños

storing & reheating
Leftovers can be stored, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. To reheat, place grilled cheese on a rimmed baking sheet and heat in the oven at 350° for 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted. You can also reheat it in the air fryer at 400° for 2-4 minutes.

I totally feel you, except opposite. With two boys, everyone thinks I want a girl. Nope – I am done and happy! And I’d be happy with this grilled cheese. I’ve made a blackberry and ham grilled cheese, but I love the saltiness of the bacon and the little bit of spice you added!

This sandwich encompasses everything I love, savory, sweet and hot? Yes this is one amazing sandwich my friend! You’ve got me craving it at 6am! For the record, one of my dear friends side and misery when she found out that my second would be ANOTHER girl (she has 2 boys/1 girl). She snapped my happiness right from under me and told me that I needed a “nuclear family”. Over the years, Ive teased her about it but isn’t it funny how everyone has an opinion? You’re right though, our family, like yours, is exactly how it should be! ❤️
Rachel @ Rachel Cooks says
This is one dreamy grilled cheese!
PS: YES – we have a boy and girl and everyone tells me we should be done since we have one of each. Okay?

I hate to admit that I’m a planner to a fault! 😀 However, when it came to having kids, I was happy with boys or girls ……. and lemme tell you, after having 4 boys, I can’t tell you how many times we were asked if we were trying for a girl!! My mom is one of seven sisters – no brothers – and I can only imagine the stuff my grandparents heard!! 😀
I am totally loving this grilled cheese combo – I love all of those flavors and I think they would be a flavor explosion together!!

I think as I have gotten older I have become less of a planner in that aspect. I realize that it doesn’t matter what you plan, life is going to happen and there are things beyond our control! Luckily we can control our food and let me tell you adding fruit to grilled cheese is amazing!! Love the blackberries in this!

I’m trying to figure out where in the hell you fit it in to drop your mommy bragging on a post for a grilled cheese recipe? Literally not even two subjects related to each other, it was really weird.

This is FANTASTIC!!! THE king of the sandwiches! I did it with plum gem… You can serve with dried smoked plums…

This sandwich was great! I didn’t have sour dough bread on hand, but did have an Italian loaf from the bakery. I removed all seeds from the jalapeño. Next time I will try it on Sour dough bread and leave some of the seeds in the jalapeño. Also, I think I would prefer a stronger cheese… sharp white cheddar, perhaps. Thanks for a great grilled cheese idea!

I look at comments after a recipe to see if people tried it and liked it or maybe added a change to it. I read these comments and realized that there is a lot of counseling and a lot of people that just need to be heard. You must have a good feel to people.

This sandwich is amazing! I loved it so much, that when we had pizza night, I took the leftover toppings and made it into, you guessed it… a pizza! Yup, it was also amazing. My guests were amazed at how awesome the pizza was. One friend just sat there eating it, repeating the phrase “oh my God”, so ya, we’ll be making this again and again and…

I didn’t have Swiss cheese, jalapenos, or sourdough bread so I made some substitutions but it still turned out amazingly tasty! I made mine with honey wheat bread, smoked gouda, bacon, and blackberry jelly. The combination of sweet, salty, and smoky is so good! I definitely want to make this as written once I get the right ingredients but that combination is also really good!
flgirl says
Amazing! Made this for dinner, it’s fabulous. Only thing I substituted was instead of 4 slices of Swiss, I used 2 Swiss and 2 provolone. Soooo good!

OMG! Party in my mouth!!! I am stunned to see this recipe has been around 5 years and I just discovered it. I made it as written, but substituted strawberry for blackberry because that’s what I had, and I feel like I have died and gone to Heaven. I wish I could stop thinking about the calories, 😂 Will make again…so, so good!
David Mutina says
Why the hell would you put 4 slices of cheese on one sandwich?
Cathy Trochelman says
Personal preference. I like my grilled cheese CHEESY! You can feel free to use any amount you find appropriate 🙂
Ashok says
wow such a useful website
lwntrtn says
Great flavor combination of savory and sweet and a bit salty. I used a lot more jalapeño than the amount called for and we could not really get the flavor of them. Next time I might use jalapeño pepper jelly instead of the blackberry maybe to pick up a little heat. All in all this is a fun tasty sandwich. I used mayo on the outside of these sandwiches instead of butter. Many restaurants use mayo instead of butter when making their grilled cheese sandwiches.
