It’s hard to know what kind of mom you’re going to be until you are one. Even if you have a pretty good sense of who you are as a person…..there’s just something about being a mom that’s different. Four kids in, I think I have a good understanding of the kind of mom I am. (I also have a good understanding of the kind of mom I’d like to be…..but that’s a different story!)

When it comes to me as a mom, there are a decent number of things I’ve never been good at. Like getting down on the floor and playing make believe with them….or going outside and building a snowman with them…..or taking them to fun places filled with inflatables and trampolines. But there are a lot of things I am good at, and one of my favorites is having fun with them in the kitchen!

Maybe it’s because I spend so much of my time in the kitchen, or because it gets so much of my attention… or maybe it’s just because measuring and pouring and stirring is fun… but whatever it is, the chance to help me in the kitchen is something my kids wouldn’t dream of passing up. For the most part, they’ve been content to just help me with whatever I’m working on… but lately, they’ve been getting the itch to come up with some of their own creations using whatever they can dig out of the cupboards.

Like this fun Sweet & Salty Goldfish Cracker Mix! We made this one using all of our favorite salty & sweet ingredients: Goldfish crackers, pretzel flats, chocolate chunks, peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, cocoa almonds, dried cranberries, and shredded coconut. To the girls, it’s the BEST snack ever. (When it starts with Goldfish crackers, how could it not be!?) And the fact that they had a hand in making it makes it that much better. For all of us.

For them, it’s a chance to be creative. A chance to feel in charge. A chance to join me in my work and have FUN! And for me, it’s a chance to come together with my kids over something I enjoy. A chance to share some knowledge and teach some skills and hopefully pass on a love of cooking. And, on the best days, a chance for us to really connect. Because in between mixing the ingredients and snacking on the finished product, we talk. About school and friendships and hopes and worries and things we’ve all been thinking about…..and it’s like no other time in our day. It’s a moment – in this case, a “Goldfish Moment“- and it warms my heart. If I were to put it in a Haiku, it would go something like this:
