Crispy Wonton Strips are a Chinese takeout staple… and this air fryer version is our new favorite! Easy to make with just two simple ingredients, they add the perfect amount of flavor and crunch to any of your favorite dishes!
When it comes to eating out, Chinese is always at the top of our list. It’s one of the few kinds of food that everyone agrees on, which… let’s face it… makes any dining experience infinitely better!
Of course, we all have our favorite menu items, but one thing we ALL love is the Crispy Wonton Strips. They’re the perfect little snack and make a delicious addition to literally EVERYTHING… from soups to fried rice to orange chicken… (or whatever your favorite happens to be!)
And this Air Fried version is our new favorite. It adds just the right amount of flavor and crunch to any dish… without all the oil! Because as delicious as fried wonton strips are, sometimes you just want to keep things light. And with this air fryer method… you can ditch the oil and still get all that delicious crunch you’re looking for.
And if you still want the fried version? I’ve included instructions for those, too!
What are wonton strips?
Wonton Strips are a staple at many Chinese-American restaurants, and are essentially wonton strips that have been fried in oil until they’re golden brown and crispy. They can be eaten as a snack, dipped in sauce, or used as a soup or salad topper.
Wonton Strips are sold in most grocery stores near the croutons and salad dressings and are often labeled as a salad topper. But once you know just how quick and easy it is to make your own… you’ll never go store bought again!
Where do you find wonton wrappers?
Wonton Wrappers and Egg Roll wrappers are exactly the same, except for the size. They can be found in most grocery stores in the produce section. You may have to hunt around a little! They can also be purchased at an Asian grocery store if you have one nearby.
How to make Wonton Strips
Wonton Strips couldn’t be easier to make, and require just two simple ingredients: wonton or egg roll wrappers and oil. Here are the steps to follow:
- Cut the wrappers into 3/4 inch thick strips.
- If air frying, place the strips in a single layer in the air fryer basket and spray generously with oil. Air fry at 350° for 4-5 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly. Repeat with remaining strips until finished.
- If frying, heat 2 inches of oil in a heavy saucepan to 360°. Add wonton strips in batches and fry for 1-2 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly. Remove with a spider strainer or slotted spoon and drain on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Repeat with remaining strips until finished.
Recipe variations
- Cut the wonton wrappers to any thickness according to preference
- Make wonton chips by cutting wrappers into triangles
- Season them with any combination of seasonings (e.g. salt, garlic powder, onion powder, Chinese 5 Spice, ginger)
- Bake instead of frying or air frying
- Switch up the flavor of the crisps by switching up the type of oil you use
