There are certain things that are always on the menu when we order Chinese takeout. Like Orange Chicken, Fried Rice, Crab Rangoon, and definitely Egg Rolls. There’s something about the crispy fried outside and the tender, flavor-packed inside that always hits the spot. So why wouldn’t you turn them into a main dish!?
These Egg Rolls in a Bowl do exactly that. They have all the same ingredients you’d find in your favorite egg rolls… in a delicious recipe that’s perfect for lunch or dinner.
The key? Plenty of veggies and a healthy dose of your favorite protein! These Egg Rolls in a Bowl combine shredded cabbage and carrots with crispy celery, green onions, ground chicken, and the MOST flavorful seasonings ever.
Best of all? They’re topped with homemade Wonton Strips and Spicy Mayo… two things that take THIS recipe to the next level!
What you need for this recipe
Oil – I used light olive oil for sautéing, but you can substitute any type of oil you prefer.
Chicken – This recipe calls for 1 pound of lean ground chicken. I love cooking with ground chicken because it’s easy to use and has a nice mild flavor that pairs well with flavor-packed ingredients. Feel free to substitute cooked, chopped chicken breast or any other type of meat, such as pork, beef, or shrimp.
Seasonings – You’ll need just a handful of seasonings to really make the flavor pop. I used soy sauce, freshly grated ginger, sesame oil, Chinese Five Spice powder, sugar, salt, and pepper. I also added a touch or corn starch for thickening purposes.
Vegetables – Since an Egg Roll in a Bowl is basically a salad, the vegetables play an important role! This recipe calls for 7 cups of shredded cabbage (one 14 ounce bag of coleslaw mix). I also included chopped celery and sliced green onions for additional flavor.
Wonton Strips – Crispy wonton strips add just the right amount of flavor and texture to this dish. You can either purchase them at the store, near the croutons and salad toppers, or make your own easy homemade version. (*Note: leave out the wonton strips to make it gluten free!)
Spicy Mayo – Spicy mayo is a completely optional but super delicious addition that pairs well with the other ingredients in this recipe.
Sesame seeds – I sprinkled toasted sesame seeds on top. You can find them in the spice aisle at your local grocery store.
How to make Egg Roll in a Bowl

Add the vegetables – Add the shredded cabbage, celery, onion, salt, sugar, corn starch, and sesame oil. Cook, stirring, 4-5 minutes or until tender-crisp.
Garnish – Enjoy as is, or garnish with wonton strips, spicy mayo, sesame seeds, and/or additional sliced green onions.
