Take your apple crisp to the next level with the addition of pears! This Apple Pear Crisp combines the best fruits of the season with a sweet, buttery streusel topping that’s easy to make and SO delicious!
When it comes to desserts, I always love a good crisp. Dare I say I like it better than pie!??
There’s just something about the simplicity of it all… the fresh fruit topped with that crunchy streusel topping. It’s everything I need in a dessert… and to be honest, I don’t ever miss the crust!
Whether it’s Blueberry Crisp or Peach Crisp or Cherry Almond Crisp, it’s always the perfect dessert for the season. And this Apple Pear Crisp is no exception.
It combines sweet honeycrisp apples with fresh bartlett pears, all topped with a deliciously crunchy streusel topping that seriously MAKES the dessert. Best of all, it’s made with just a handful of ingredients and oven-ready in 15 minutes. The one fall dessert you’ll be making all season long!
Ingredients
Apples – Apples are the star of the show in this recipe! I used honeycrisp, which is one of my favorite varieties. Other good options include granny smith, gala, or braeburn.
Pears – Pears add another dimension of flavor and texture and are the perfect complement to the apples. I used green bartlett pears, but anjou would work, as well.
Apple pie spice – Apple pie spice is a blend of fall spices that works perfectly in this recipe. You can make your own homemade apple pie spice or find it in the spice aisle at your grocery store. And if you’re not a fan of the extra flavors, feel free to substitute cinnamon.
Brown sugar – Brown sugar is my favorite sugar to use in a streusel topping. Be sure to use fresh (soft) brown sugar and pack it tightly in the measuring cup. Granulated sugar can be used as a substitute.
Flour – Flour is another ingredient in the streusel topping. I used all purpose flour, but you can substitute any kind.
Oats – Oats are an optional but delicious addition to the topping, and any type will work. I used quick oats, but old fashioned rolled oats can also be used.
Butter – Finally, no crisp is complete with out the butter! I used 1/2 cup of salted butter. If you plan to use unsalted, just add 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the recipe.
How to make Apple Pear Crisp
Peel and slice the fruit – I usually prefer to peel the fruit when I’m making a crisp; however, you can definitely leave the skins on if you prefer. Then simply core and slice both apples and pears into thin slices and transfer them to an 8×8 inch baking pan.
Add apple pie spice – Spread the fruit out evenly, sprinkle with apple pie spice, and toss to coat.
Make the crumble topping – In a small mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, oats, and melted butter. Using a fork, mix until large crumbs form. Sprinkle evenly over the fruit.
Bake until bubbly – Bake at 350° F for 35-45 minutes or until top is golden brown and edges are bubbly. Cool 15 minutes, then serve as is or with ice cream or whipped cream.
