Chicken Wonton Cups are loaded with creamy chicken, cheese, and peppers and packed with delicious southwest flavor. The perfect appetizer for game days or holidays!
When it comes to appetizers, there are two different types of people. There are the dip people and there are the finger food people. And any good holiday party has BOTH!
I love a good dip… whether it’s Sweet Vidalia Onion Dip or Wedge Salad Dip or my delicious Crab Rangoon Dip. But if I had to choose one or the other, I’d be a finger food person all day long.
And when it comes to finger food, these Southwest Chicken Wonton Cups really are the perfect little bites! They’re crunchy, creamy, flavor-packed, and perfect for the whole family. I love using wonton wrappers to make fun appetizers, and these ones are my favorite for the holidays. Between the chicken and the cheese and the festive red and green peppers, they’re everything you want in a holiday party appetizer. As long as you have a few dips to go with them!
what you’ll love about this recipe
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how filling these wonton cups are! They truly are an appetizer that eats like a meal… and a delicious one, at that! You’ll love how quickly they come together and how popular they are at every gathering!
what you’ll need for this recipe
Wonton wrappers – Wonton wrappers form the base of these cups. They can be found in the produce section at your local grocery store. Please note – wonton wrappers are not the same as egg roll wrappers.
Chicken – I used 1 1/2 pounds of cooked chicken. You can either use chicken breast or rotisserie chicken, chopped or shredded.
Sour cream – I added 1 cup of sour cream to give the chicken a deliciously creamy texture. You could also use 1/2 cup of cream cheese combined with 1/2 cup of sour cream.
Seasonings – To season these wonton cups I used 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and 2 Tablespoons Southwest seasoning.
Cheese – I also used 2 cups of shredded Monterey Jack cheese. *Substitute Pepper Jack for extra kick!
Peppers – As a garnish I used 1/2 cup diced green pepper and 1/2 cup diced red pepper. See recipe variation ideas below.
how to make southwest chicken wonton cups
Bake the wonton cups. Spray 2 regular size muffin pans with cooking spray. Place one wonton wrapper in each muffin cup; bake 8-10 minutes, until lightly brown. Remove from oven and cool.
Make the filling. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the chicken, sour cream, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside. In a separate small bowl, combine the cheese and southwest seasoning. Set aside.
Assemble the cups and bake. Spoon the filling into each wonton cup, filling almost until full. Sprinkle with cheese mixture and bell peppers. *Cups will be full. Bake for 10 minutes, until wontons are golden brown and cheese is melted.

- Use any color of bell pepper
- Omit the peppers and top with tomatoes, sliced green onions or jalapeños
