It’s no secret that I LOVE making wonton cups, and I recently discovered my absolute favorite brand of wrappers. These Twin Dragon Wonton Wrappers are authentically sized and easy to work with, which means less tearing during the preparation process. They brown evenly with lower oil absorption, which means you end up with crispy, crunchy wonton cups… just the way they should be! Not to mention, they’re the only Non-GMO Verified, Certified Vegan wrappers in the US.
So what are we waiting for? Let’s get started.
what you’ll need for this recipe
Wonton wrappers – Wonton wrappers form the deliciously crispy base of this recipe. I used Twin Dragons brand, which are the only Non-GMO Verified, Certified Vegan wrappers in the US. I love them because of their superior texture and flavor, even browning, and lower oil absorption which makes for crunchier wonton cups.
Chicken – Chicken is the main ingredient and first “layer” in the filling. I used shredded rotisserie chicken for convenience, but you can use any type of shredded or chopped chicken.
Taco seasoning – To give these wonton cups extra delicious flavor, I seasoned the chicken with homemade chicken taco seasoning. You can feel free to make your own or use your favorite store bought seasoning.
Black beans – No plate of nachos is complete without beans! I used canned black beans, drained and rinsed, but you could also use pinto, refried, or any variety you’d like.
Cheese – These wonton cups have not one, but TWO different types of cheese (as all good nachos do)! I used a combination of salsa con queso (jarred queso sauce) and a shredded Mexican cheese blend.
Toppings – Now for the fun part… the toppings! I topped my wonton cups with diced tomatoes, cilantro, sour cream, and sliced jalapeños. You could also add avocado, black olives, salsa, sliced green onions, or any of your favorites.
how to make chicken nacho wonton cups
Pre-bake the wonton cups. Spray a 12 cup muffin tin with cooking spray, then press one wonton wrapper into each cup. Bake at 350°F for 7-8 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.
Prep the ingredients. While the wontons are baking, start prepping the ingredients. In a small mixing bowl, combine the cooked chicken and taco seasoning, stirring to coat. Drain and rinse the beans, chop the tomato and cilantro, and slice the jalapeño.
Fill the wonton cups & bake. Layer the ingredients in the pre-baked wonton cups, starting with the seasoned chicken, the black beans, the queso sauce, and the shredded cheese. Bake at 350° for an additional 7-8 minutes, until the cheese is melted.
Garnish. Garnish with tomatoes, cilantro, sour cream, and sliced jalapeños. Enjoy!
tips for success
- For perfectly shaped cups, lay the wonton wrapper over the top of the muffin cup with all four corners sticking out. Use your fingertips to gently press the wrapper into the cup, pushing it into the sides to open it up as much as possible.
- Be careful not to over-bake the cups the first time. You can always add more baking time once they’re filled!
- Reserve any fresh vegetables, such as lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, or jalapeños, as garnishes once the wonton cups have been baked.
Recipe Variations
- Instead of chicken, use ground turkey, ground beef, steak, or carnitas
- Substitute refried or pinto beans for black beans
- Use homemade queso instead of store bought
- Add any of your favorite toppings, such as black olives, avocado, salsa, or green onions
- Add a sprinkle of cotija or queso fresco on top
