what you’ll need for this recipe
Bread – One large loaf of Italian bread per sandwich. I used a soft Italian loaf from the grocery store bakery, sliced in half lengthwise.
Meat – Any combination of sandwich meats will work well. I used 1/2 pound each turkey, ham and salami. Capicola, mortadella, pepperoni, or prosciutto are also good options.
Cheese – 6 ounces Italian cheese adds delicious flavor and a gooey, melted texture. I used sliced Provolone, but mozzarella would also work well.
Veggies – I added sliced tomato, red onion, and banana peppers. Sliced mushrooms, bell peppers, sun dried tomatoes, or fresh arugula would also be great additions.
Vinaigrette – Italian vinaigrette is a key ingredient in any Italian sub, and I added a simple homemade vinaigrette to this one.
how to make italian subs
Prep the ingredients. Slice the bread lengthwise into 2 long halves. Slice the tomatoes and red onion and make the Italian vinaigrette.
Assemble the sub. Assemble the sub by layering the meats, cheese, and veggies. Drizzle with vinaigrette and sprinkle with Italian seasoning as desired.
Wrap & bake. Wrap in aluminum foil and place on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until cheese is fully melted and sandwich is warmed through.

Wondering how far in advance you can make this sub? Can it sit in fridge for a whole day? And, if so, would you then put the dressing on just prior to baking? Any thoughts on making it ahead of time?
Yvonne says
Can this be served at a picnic? Will it taste good room temperature?
