Hawaiian Mimosas are a fun twist on a classic! Made with pineapple juice, Malibu rum, and a splash of grenadine, they look just like a Hawaiian sunset….in a glass!
If you ask me, no brunch is complete without mimosas. Don’t get me wrong… I love a good Bloody Mary from time to time… but there’s just something about mimosas that’s easy. Easy to make, easy to drink, and oh so easy to love.
They’re a staple at family get togethers and weekend brunches with friends, and one of the things I love most about them is all the possibilities! You can switch up everything from the juice to the liqueur to even the champagne (beermosa anyone??) and one seems to be more delicious than the next.
This Hawaiian Mimosa is one of my all time FAVORITE twists… for obvious reasons. Not only is it absolutely delicious, but it couldn’t be any prettier if it tried. It has all the colors and layers of a beautiful Hawaiian sunset… hence the name… and it’s guaranteed to be your new summer favorite!
what you’ll need for this recipe
Champagne – Champagne is a key ingredient in any mimosa recipe, and this one is no exception. In reality, most “champagne” we buy is actually some variety of sparkling wine, and can include varieties like prosecco or cava as well. I used a Brut sparkling wine in this recipe.
Malibu – Malibu is a coconut flavored rum that actually combines rum with coconut liqueur. It adds delicious flavor and an extra pop of sweetness to this recipe, and can be found near other varieties of rum at the grocery or liquor store.
Pineapple juice – Pineapple juice replaces the typical orange juice in this mimosa recipe, giving it even more of a tropical twist. Pineapple juice can be found in canned or bottled varieties in both the juice aisle and/or the refrigerated juice aisle at your local grocery store. I used small cans, which are shelf stable and only need to be refrigerated once they’re opened.
Grenadine – A splash of grenadine adds both flavor and color to this mimosa, giving it a beautiful layered effect. Grenadine can be found in a small bottle in the liquor section at your grocery store. You can also use maraschino cherry juice from the jar.
Garnishes – I garnished my mimosas with a fresh pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry. This is a completely optional, but fun, finishing touch.
how to make hawaiian mimosas
Pour the pineapple juice. Pour 3 ounces of chilled pineapple juice into a champagne flute or wine glass.
Add the Malibu. Add 1 ounce of Malibu.
Top with champagne. Tip the glass and slowly top with 3 ounces of chilled champagne.
Add the grenadine. Carefully pour .5 ounces of grenadine along the edge of the glass for a layered effect. Do not mix!
Garnish. Garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge and maraschino cherry.
champagne vs. sparkling wine
Most champagne we enjoy in the US is actually some variety of sparkling wine, yet we use the term “champagne” as a catch all. In reality, sparkling wine can only be called champagne if it comes from the region of Champagne, France. In short, all champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine in champagne.
tips for success
Hawaiian Mimosas are incredibly easy to make, and if you follow these basic tips they’re sure to turn out perfect every single time!
- Start with chilled ingredients. Mimosas are best cold, but since I wouldn’t suggest adding ice, chilled ingredients are the way to go.
- Use a dryer sparkling wine. This recipe has a number of sweet ingredients, so using a dryer (less sweet) champagne helps balance them out.
- Pour carefully. Be sure to tip your glass when pouring the champagne to minimize the foam. Also remember to pour the grenadine slowly along the edge of the glass to avoid mixing the ingredients. This will create the beautiful layered effect you’re going for!
Recipe Variations
- Use any variety of sparkling wine, adjusting the sweetness level according to your tastes
- Use a pineapple juice blend
- Substitute orange juice for a more traditional twist on a mimosa
- Use any brand of coconut rum
- Substitute coconut flavored vodka or liqueur
- Garnish with canned pineapple rings or chunks for ease and convenience
