The BEST French Toast ever! This recipe calls for a healthy dose of cinnamon, butter, brown sugar, and vanilla… no syrup required! The perfect breakfast treat, and one of our family’s favorites!
I’ve often said that if I could only eat one meal a day, it would definitely be breakfast. And if I really think about it, it’s because for breakfast… anything goes! From omelettes to breakfast potatoes to pancakes to smoothies, breakfast is kind of a catch all meal. And I’m totally here for it.
Especially if french toast is on the menu! And not just any french toast, but THIS french toast. It’s a recipe that was shared with me recently by my daughter’s boyfriend’s dad (who also happens to be Santa Claus!) and it truly is the BEST.
(Even Santa thinks so!)
Why is it the best, you ask? Well, it all comes down to 3 ingredients: butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar. And I’m not talking about regular amounts of each. I’m talking about more than seems reasonable.
Because when you combine the three… and add in some vanilla extract… the end result is sweet, buttery french toast perfection. In an easy recipe that’s ready in 15 minutes or less!
It’s the perfect weekend breakfast and we love making it for holidays and special occasions. Just beware – once you try it, you’ll never want french toast any other way again!
what you’ll need for this recipe
Bread – You’ll need 8-12 pieces of bread, depending on the size and thickness of each slice. I used 10 pieces of thick cut croissant style bread.
Eggs, Milk & Vanilla – For the batter, I whisked together 6 large eggs, 2 Tablespoons milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
Butter – Butter is a key ingredient in this recipe. I used 1 1/2 sticks room temperature butter. (This amount can be adjusted to your preferences.)
Cinnamon – I used 3 Tablespoons ground cinnamon, which is about 1/2 teaspoon per side for each piece of bread.
Brown sugar – I sprinkled 1/3 cup brown sugar evenly between the slices. I used light brown sugar, but dark would also work.
how to make french toast
1. Make the egg mixture. In a large shallow bowl, combine eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Whisk well.
2. Heat the skillet. Heat the skillet to 325°. Add 4 Tablespoons salted butter and heat until melted and lightly browned. The butter should coat the entire skillet.
3. Dip the bread. Dip each piece of bread in the egg mixture on both sides, then place on the skillet. Coat the top side of the bread with cinnamon, about 1/2 teaspoon per slice. Cook until golden brown on the bottom.
4. Flip. Flip the bread and coat each piece with another 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Add 1 Tablespoon room temperature butter to each piece and sprinkle with brown sugar. Cook until golden brown and remove from skillet.
Storing & Reheating
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. To reheat, transfer to a shallow oven-safe baking pan and cover with foil. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes or until heated through.
