Ingredients
The ingredient list for this recipe is actually relatively short. Aside from the shrimp, you need just a few ingredients for the sauce and you’re good to go! Be sure to start with raw, deveined shrimp and completely remove the shell and tail. Cooked shrimp will become over-cooked in the process of frying.
For the sauce, you can find sriracha sauce near the ketchup and other hot sauce brands OR in the Asian food aisle. You’ll also find the sweet chili sauce in the Asian food aisle (it may be labeled as Thai Sweet Chili Sauce).
For the shrimp:
- 1 pound medium raw shrimp, peeled & deveined
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
- oil for frying
For the sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayo
- 2-3 tablespoons sriracha sauce (adjust according to your preference)
- 2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey
For garnish:
- toasted sesame seeds
- fresh parsley or sliced green onions
Instructions
Make the sauce – in a small bowl, combine sauce ingredients and mix well. Set aside.
Heat the oil – heat 1 inch of oil in a large skillet to 375° F. While the oil is heating, prepare your shrimp.
Soak the shrimp – place the peeled & deveined shrimp in a medium bowl. Pour buttermilk over the shrimp to cover it.
Coat the shrimp – in a second bowl, combine the cornstarch, garlic powder, salt & pepper. Dip the shrimp one at a time in the cornstarch mixture to coat. Place on wax paper.
Fry the shrimp – add the coated shrimp to the hot oil and fry for 30 seconds – 1 minute on each side. Remove from oil to a plate lined with paper towels.
Combine the shrimp & sauce – once all the shrimp has been fried, toss it in the sauce until coated. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds and parsley or green onions as desired. Enjoy!
