The BEST EVER French Onion Dip! This dip is super creamy and packed with the flavors of French Onion Soup. Delicious with potato chips, crostini, or any of your favorite veggies!

There are certain things I try at nearly every restaurant I go to… and French Onion Soup is one of them. If I see it on a menu, it’s basically a guarantee. I WILL be ordering it.
So over the years, as you can imagine, I’ve tried countless French Onion Soups. I’ve learned how different restaurants make them, what I like and what I don’t like, what sets one apart from the others. And I’ve also learned that it’s not only French Onion Soup I love… it’s all things French Onion!
From French Onion Risotto to French Onion Crostini to French Onion Chicken, I love the deep, savory, umami flavor they all bring. And this French Onion Dip just might be my favorite one yet.
It has all the flavors of French Onion Soup, in an ultra rich, creamy dip you’ll want to eat straight from the spoon. This dip is packed to the brim with caramelized onions and seasoned with cooking sherry, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh chives.
It’s especially delicious with your favorite potato chips, but we also love it with crostini, crackers, or fresh veggies!

what you’ll need for this recipe
Caramelized onions – Caramelized onions are what give this dip its delicious onion flavor. I used 3 cups of chopped yellow onions, sautéed low and slow in 3 Tablespoons salted butter.
Sour cream – Sour cream is the main ingredient in the creamy base. I used 1 cup plain sour cream (sub plain Greek yogurt to lighten it up!)
Mayo – I combined the sour cream with 1/2 cup mayo for extra richness and flavor. Feel free to reduce the amount to 1/4 cup for less rich, dense flavor.
Cooking sherry – Cooking sherry is a common ingredient in French Onion recipes, adding a rich, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor profile. It’s a distinct flavor that can easily overpower, so I would suggest adding it slowly.
Worcestershire sauce – Worcestershire sauce adds a deep, savory, umami flavor profile to this recipe. I added 2 teaspoons.
Seasonings – For seasonings I used a combination of garlic powder, onion powder, salt & pepper. Feel free to also add smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, or dried thyme.

how to make french onion dip
Caramelize the onions. Melt 3 Tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, salt & pepper. Sauté, stirring regularly, until the onions begin to brown. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are deep brown and caramelized. Stir in cooking sherry, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder.
Combine the ingredients. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, mayo, and caramelized onions. (Reserve some onions for garnish.) Mix well.
Garnish. Transfer to a small serving bowl; garnish with reserved onions, fresh chives, and fresh cracked pepper.

Recipe Variations
- Substitute plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream
- Add a splash of beef broth to the onions while cooking them
- Use sweet vidalia onions for a slightly sweeter flavor
- Omit the cooking sherry or adjust the amount
- Substitute dry white wine for the cooking sherry
- Add additional seasonings, such as smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, or dried thyme
- Garnish with fresh thyme
- Serve it warm by transferring to a small baking dish, topping with shredded Swiss cheese (optional) and baking at 350°F for 20-25 minutes.
