French Onion Dip

The BEST EVER French Onion Dip! This dip is super creamy and packed with the flavors of French Onion Soup. Delicious with potato chips, crostini, or any of your favorite veggies!

Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoons salted butter
  • 3 cups onions diced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons cooking sherry Add 1 additional teaspoon, to taste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • fresh chives for garnish

Instructions

  • Melt 3 Tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, salt & pepper. Sauté, stirring regularly, until the onions begin to brown. Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are deep brown and caramelized.
  • Stir in cooking sherry, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder. Set aside to cool slightly.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, mayo, and caramelized onions. (Reserve some onions for garnish.) Mix well.
  • Transfer to a small serving bowl; garnish with reserved onions, fresh chives, and fresh cracked pepper.

Notes

Recipe Variations

  • Substitute plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream
  • Add a splash of beef broth to the onions while cooking them
  • Use sweet vidalia onions for a slightly sweeter flavor
  • Omit the cooking sherry or adjust the amount
  • Substitute dry white wine for the cooking sherry
  • Add additional seasonings, such as smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, or dried thyme
  • Garnish with fresh thyme
  • Serve it warm by transferring to a small baking dish, topping with shredded Swiss cheese (optional) and baking at 350°F for 20-25 minutes.

Storage Tips

Leftover French Onion Dip can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Serve cold, at room temperature, or heated until warm.
