If you’ve ever checked out my “Lemon Tree Home” page, you know that our house underwent a bit of a transformation when we first moved in. A transformation that was much needed. We did everything from painting walls and cabinets to replacing doors and toilets to installing new counter tops and floors to refacing our fireplace and making it useable again…..and that was just on the inside!

On the outside of the house we replaced our siding and roof, poured a patio in the backyard, got all new windows, planted grass, and cut down literally dozens of trees. If you’re getting the idea that our house was a hot mess when we first moved in, you’re exactly right. And here’s the thing. When you move into a hot mess of a house, you never know how long the mess is going to last. Because you keep uncovering layer upon layer of it…..and to be honest, it sometimes feels like there’s not enough money in the world to fix all the problems you encounter over the years.

The latest? We discovered that 50 of our trees have emerald ash disease. Yes….FIFTY. And after talking to multiple arborists, we decided to have them cut down. ALL of them. So for the past 3 days, our yard has been full of very large tree cutting equipment, and the only sounds we’ve heard are the sound of a chainsaw and a wood chipper….with an occasional thud every time a tree falls.

Today will be their last day here, quite possibly forever. Because you guys – we went from having a semi-wooded lot to having an awkwardly empty lot that is seriously begging for some trees. I’m trying to look on the bright side (literally)….and focus on the fact that we now have a lot more sunlight. And more sunlight is always a good thing, right??

But the truth is, I’m a little sad. I loved our trees, and I loved the very specific feel they gave to our house. And now, well, now we will have to create something new. I’m not sure how long that will take, but I do know that in the mean time I’m pouring myself a glass of Strawberry Mango Sangria. Because unlike trees, strawberries and mangoes are still plentiful right now. And they taste amazing with mango juice, sweet white wine, and coconut rum. And most importantly, if there’s one thing we know to be true, it’s that sangria makes everything better. Especially Strawberry Mango Sangria. The rest we will figure out in time.

I didn’t have mango juice so I used pineapple juice. I used a bottle of sauvignon blanc and about 1/2 bottle of sparking water (pelligrino) to make it not as strong. It was delish! And looked as good as it tasted.
