It’s funny how little things can make us realize just how much we’ve changed over time. I can think of countless examples – like the fact that I no longer care if I look presentable when I leave the house, or the fact that it took me days to come up with a Christmas list, or the fact that 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep feels absolutely amazing.
I feel like I’ve always been fairly down to earth….but there are some stories from my previous life that make me wonder. Take, for example, the story about me and hot buttered rum.
It was back in the days of book club, when I still got together regularly with friends. When I still read. We were all heading downtown to one of the girl’s apartments, each of us with some type of food or drink in hand. (Clearly….because what’s a book club without food and drink??) My contribution to the night? You guessed it. Hot buttered rum.
It was in a crock pot, which is always dangerous, and somehow, as I was walking from the car to the door, it splashed all over me. Hot. Buttered. RUM. Which, at that time in my life, felt like a HUGE disaster. My cute shirt was now wet and sticky and stained. And, at that point in life, I felt like my night was ruined.
Now, it’s hard to say how I would handle it these days, but I’d like to think I’d be able to laugh it off, pour myself a big mug, and enjoy the time with my friends. If for no other reason than I NEVER get time with my friends! Also? This Hot Buttered Rum is delicious! It’s sweetened with Truvia® Brown Sugar Blend, flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, and made with just half the butter of the original recipe. Plus, it’s made in a crock pot, so it’s perfect for all your holiday gatherings!
Just a word to the wise, though, if you’re making this to take to a party, BE CAREFUL! I’d hate for hot buttered rum to ruin your night….not to mention….this is one drink you do not want to waste.
- 1 c. Truvia® Brown Sugar Blend
- ¼ c. butter
- pinch salt
- 3 sticks cinnamon
- 6 whole cloves
- ½ tsp. nutmeg
- ¼ tsp. ginger
- 8 c. hot water
- 2-3 c. dark rum
- Combine all ingredients in a large crock pot. Stir well.
- Cover and cook on high for 2 hours, then turn to low for 3-6 hours.
- Serve warm in mugs.
