Classic Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries OR frozen
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, orange juice, sugar, and salt. Stir.
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is melted and cranberries begin to pop (about 6-8 minutes.)
  • Add cinnamon and nutmeg and continue cooking 2-3 more minutes.
  • Remove from heat; cool to room temperature before serving.

Notes

Recipe Variations

  • Substitute brown sugar for granulated sugar
  • Substitute maple syrup or honey
  • Add grated orange zest
  • Add additional fruit, such as orange segments or chopped pears
  • Add ginger, allspice, cardamom or cloves
  • Add a splash of vanilla extract
  • Cook more or less time to achieve desired consistency

Storage Tips

Leftover cranberry sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or in a freezer safe container for up to three months. For best flavor, serve at room temperature.
